Minor bugs in 'Alarms' emails

From build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

Minor bugs in 'Alarms' emails

Post by Cortmalaw »

These are minor and not at all urgent!

1. Since the last time I updated Cumulus MX (in Dec 2023 - but I updated about 6 months worth of versions), the units have been missing from Alarm emails:
  • Previously I got: "The temperature has fallen below 4 °C."
  • Now I get: "The temperature has fallen below 4 ." ie with a space before the full stop, but no units
Actually, there should not be a space between 4 and °C, but as a space is correct for other units, I'd not quibble this one

2. This one has always been present. Could you rationalise the email heading and text so that the short 'preview' version of the email that appears in email App or on phone contains the key information? Presently, all alerts look the same, but you could easily re-structure to show the important information in the heading and early in the message, so that the message does not need to be opened to see the main information?.
For example, change from the present:
Cumulus MX Alarm - StationName
A Cumulus MX alarm has been triggered.
The temperature has fallen below 4 °C.

To the more helpful:
StationName: Temp below 4 °C
The temperature has fallen below 4 °C.
This is a Cumulus MX alarm for StationName sent at hh:mm on DD MMM YY.

2nd example. Change from:
Cumulus MX Alarm - StationName
A Cumulus MX alarm has been triggered. An upgrade to Cumulus MX is now available. Last message: Build 3278 is available

To the more helpful:
StationName: New Cumulus MX version available
An upgrade to Cumulus MX is now available. Build 3278 is available.
This is a Cumulus MX alarm for StationName sent at hh:mm on DD MMM YY.

Cheers! And keep up the good work!

Thanks, found and fixed the units issue.

Your other suggestion is good, but not as easy to implement now (it would be fairly at the beginning). I'll think more about it.

Thanks.
If it's putting info into the headings that is difficult, I could make other suggestions - ie, putting the key data in the first characters of the message, as that is also visible in preview.

How about:

Cumulus MX Alarm - StationName
Temperature below 4 °C.

Cumulus MX Alarm - StationName
Build 1234 now available.

You can effectively do that yourself now. Edit the email subject and preamble (make that a ".", and empty string will revert the default string on start-up) in Locale Strings > Alarms

Hi,
Where is Locale Strings > Alarms ?
From Settings tab > select Locale strings (at the bottom of the list) > select Alarms (last item)

Enjoy,
Paul
