Alternate to FileZilla for connecting to webhost

Post by PaulMy »

Is there an alternate way to access my webhost and uploading files?
I am now getting constant

Code: Select all

Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Response: 421 Too many connections (8) from this IP
Error: Could not connect to server.
The reason I ask is that my ISP, Rogers, and my webhost, GoDaddy, are blaming each other for the reason that I can't connect to my webhost via FileZilla so can't upload files, like Neil's Alternate website and other template updates. This problem of not being able to connect to my host with FileZilla had been somewhat intermittent for a while but now can't connect at all (over the past 24 hours have only been able to connect a few times and then only for a short time until it disconnects). I can access my host GoDaddy cPanel and File Manager and have learned how I can Upload that way but that is by selecting 1 file at a time.

I have argued that the cause is GoDaddy but of course that doesn't get me anywhere, other than unpleasant phone conversation. GoDaddy's last comment was "just wait it out" as your ISP will get it resolved. My reason for blaming GoDaddy is that some Cumulus template users have asked for help over time and they have been cooperative to give me their login credentials and I have no problem connecting to them. Right now I've tried by running 4 copies of FileZilla for 4 different sites; all 3 of the non-GoDaddy hosting sites work fine for me, but not my own GoDaddy hosted komokaweather.com.

The lack of accessing GoDaddy is not limited to using FileZilla as CU1 and CMX 5-minute interval uploads using FTP also fail a lot. The realtime uploads seem to work ok as do the CMX PHP uploads (I can check with cPanel File Manager on the Last Modified time).

Moving away from GoDaddy is not an easy solution as I have my emails with them, and also I accommodate 3 local non-profits' domains on my GoDaddy komokaweather.com account along with emails for them.

So, any other easy way to upload files?

Trying to enjoy,
Paul

Filezilla is just an ftp client and as such is in my experience just works. It seems like there is a limit of concurrent connections which is what needs fixing. Perhaps a webhost with higher limits will work better.

On Windows I use WinSCP for SFTP but it also connects over FTP(S), but like Stuart I think you will still hit your upload limit.

Doing some more investigation and just by accident found that my daily GoDaddy backups have been failing for a long time, but no notices provided other than hidden deep in the GoDaddy website structure. I wonder if that SFTP/FTP issue is related my connection issue...

Code: Select all

Backup Error Notice
We were unable to connect to the hosting server with the SFTP/FTP credentials provided. Please verify that the SFTP/FTP connection details are, correct and try again.
I have a ticket for this.

Enjoy,
Paul

Sounds like you're connections aren't closing properly so you're just adding more and more connections and hitting the limit.
Under FTP and general settings have you tried Enable FTP rename it may help.

I had problems with hostpapa and there very slow ftp servers which were also flakey.

In the end I hosted the data side of things myself as apart from the slowness the servers often gave an invalid response to the request of which port can I use so the client went back and asked for another port which resulted in the firewalls seeing it as a port scan.

I gave up when level one and level two support started arguing with each other as level one confused http requests with ftp requests.

No I haven't tried that yet, and thanks for the reminder. Last few days have been fine after I looked at my many FTP uploads and stopped quite a number so things have been much better. And my remote access with FileZilla has also been restored. I won't do anything until I get the issue with my ISP resolved, hopefully tomorrow, as that issue stops me from using the PHP Upload method.

Enjoy,

I ran into that 'concurrent FTP sessions' issue with IONOS and godaddy shared services sites a while ago with all the different weather programs I run to test the Saratoga templates/other templates. IONOS and godaddy do have a 8-session max per IP address AFAIK.

What I ended up doing was a bit complicated, but works (even though it's not needed with my VPS server as I run the FTP daemon):

Installed (On the Win10 WX system) an instance of XAMPP with http/ftp servers. It sources my webcam image via http. The FTP service receives files from various weather programs to several local directories.

I installed FLING automated FTP program which either scans directories in the FTP server for changes or initiates uploads at an interval) and that does the main FTP for the auxiliary weather programs.

I have my main Saratoga website driven directly by uploads from Weather-Display and WeatherLink while the others use the FLING method.

XAMPP is https://www.apachefriends.org/ and is free.

FLING is licensed software from https://www.nchsoftware.com/fling/index.html in both free (limited) and purchased (Power edition $50) for unlimited sites.

Of course, you could remove the FTP limits if you run your own VPS server, but that has a whole new set of administrator challenges.
