Tonga Eruption

EDIT: Updated with a new graph to show the secondary anomaly just before 02:00 UTC on 16/01/22.

The shock wave from the volcanic explosion seems to have passed through the UK at 19:00 UTC, I'm really surprised it was still that strong...

I make it distance of around 10,000 miles, or 16,000 km.

Yep - same.

That's insane! I wonder what the spike would have been like had we had our Davis stations during the Krakatoa explosion?

Ditto here.

Terry, I'm a bit confused by the time it reached New Zealand. The eruption was at 04:10GMT on 15 January. Surely it would have arrived in NZ in a couple of hours.

Terry, given the eruption occurred at 04:10 GMT that would be around 16:10 NZ time. So it only took a couple of hours to reach you. Mystery solved. :D

Wagenborgen NL: At 15/1 20h10 shockwave peak of the #Tonga volcano and at 20h30 the valley (1025.9 vs 1023.4) . Starting 22h45 also the finedust starts rising to unusual levels (PM2.5 at 30; PM10 at 70 and still rising at 5h30 on 16/1). Not sure that is related though. I will post my charts later when at the computer.

Pretty sensational event!

[EDIT] So here is my chart. Notice the second shock wave (interference wave?) at around 03h00. And my remark about the finedust may best be ignored. Though indeed high particle concentrations, they seem only present in NW-Europe.

Those in the northern hemisphere are in winter with all doors and windows closed. So how does that pressure wave get into your house? :?:

      Air is very thin

[Edit] Btw: that's why the pressure sensor is in the console and not in your outside station!

Pressure will equalise due to gaps around doors and windows. This happens all the time, otherwise you would have difficulty opening and closing.

Same in this part of the UK, with another anomaly just before 0200 UTC.

Hans and Freddie, not forgetting air bricks in the construction allowing the house to “breath”. :D

Same anomaly here at the same time. What caused that? Secondary shockwave but unlike the first one pressure dropped before rising.
