Re: Fire Weather - pwsFWI
By the way, although it is not related to this thread (I don't really know where to post it), I have updated to today's new version 4.1.0 but, it still shows (despite removing the browser cache) the version that I had installed previously: Version 4.1.0 beta:

Aiaia... Glitch for this mission.

Re: Fire Weather - pwsFWI
The beteljuuice feeble attempt at a small widget ...
I ended up deciding to keep the flames, but didn't want them giving a false impression of urgency. So I tried experimenting with size - not very successfully.
So I ended up with a 'muted' opacity which doesn't increase until values are between 560 > 640 (just because ..)
Data is from kocher
beteljuice effort just view source to see what I did
but ... much coding has passed since the txt snippet was created - the way in which people want to use it is to display 'current' value - but of course there is no such thing and this is yesterdays value - however, there is now the 'predictive' code, which could prodce a speculative 'today' value ?
... over to you Hans

@beteljuice:
Interesting gadget , thank you I am honoured
I'll look at it and see what I will do, maybe combine it with the suggestion of Javier and then make some Christmas tree with flashing bells and whistles depending on the value.
Seriously: these suggestions are going to result in something (some time).
Does the PHP do anything important or is the resulting page source enough (I assume it is)?

All the php part is, is the inject of the .txt file (commented in the html)Does the PHP do anything important or is the resulting page source enough (I assume it is)?
Didn't put default font-size in <div>, done now before K blows it up
Edit: I feel an alternative coming on, be back later ...
Edit: #2 With a possible alternative, small change, but would require coding by Hans OR at least an id for the pwsFWIcurrent.txt <span id="????

Re: Fire Weather - pwsFWI
A few days ago a small discussion about wildfires in the UK was sparked and quenched because it was in the wrong thread. Of course it was, but there was a suggestion that there were not many forest fires, mostly peatland fires. In that context, I would like to post this twitter thread on UK wildfires here. It is a serious issue in the UK as everywhere else.

Re: Fire Weather - pwsFWI
Interesting, I was looking at this page linked from that thread that allows you to view the UK data in a few ways. It does confirm that most wild fires in the UK are moorland/heathland not woodland. And that last year was a very bad year for total burn area, mainly due to fires in Scotland, whereas 2018 was a bad year for England.

Re: Fire Weather - pwsFWI
Interesting page indeed, but I don't read from it that most fires are moorland fires. I assume that you assume it from the locations but the graphs itself don't mention the fuel type. I would not be too sure about the relation between location and moorland. Spruce is a popular species for plantation on degraded peatland and burns easily.mcrossley wrote: ↑Tue 11 Aug 2020 9:59 am Interesting, I was looking at this page linked from that thread that allows you to view the UK data in a few ways. You mention woodland and not forest. Intentionally? There is a serious difference between forest and woods in species and ecological water balance.
If you view the EFFIS Current Situation viewer, tick 'Fuel' and zoom in on area south of Glasgow, you'll see there are too many forests there to rule out forest fire. No doubt the fire dynamics is very different from Southern Europe. Really going into it requires time - as I said the data is not very well accessible - but I may look into the inventory.
If that page does show anything, it is that wildfires are increasing over the last five years and that apparently in spring most fires occur.
The driest weather apparently in March/April (most wind?).

Re: Fire Weather - pwsFWI
Yes, I was inferring from the locations, the vast majority (and all the largest) are open land. Knowing most the areas having hiked in them (the English/Welsh ones anyway, only parts of Scotland), they will be sparsely wooded, and tend to be upland areas. Lots of these areas are also either in National Parks and are protected environments, or are open access. Both environments are generally also used for grouse shooting so are managed as open heath - burning back vegetation semi-regularly to supress trees and dense undergrowth. Some of these "controlled" burns have been responsible for wild fires in the past
Indeed commercially cultivated single species conifer "forests" are very different from traditional woodland. But the managed forests also have firebreaks, access roads etc and are generally much less attractive to human visitors (or visitors of most species come to that), and humans are probably (almost certainly - both speculation, I haven't seen numbers) the main cause of wild fires in the UK.

Re: Fire Weather - pwsFWI
They are becoming more & more difficult down here in Aus.
40 years ago we could basically let them go & they'd just burn themselves out.
Flame fronts never got over 2 feet high, and they could be controlled with nothing more than a wet wheat sack.
They were low temp, non destructive & kept the
Since they have been putting in restrictions there's been more & more build up.
Attempts to carry out controlled burns & keep them below the 1m flame front limit leads to them being lit then basically extinguished.
I did take a drive thru one of our back burns last year, looked like the only achieved a 25% reduction in floor fuel.
Uploaded the Dashcam footage of that drive to here.

Re: Fire Weather - pwsFWI
@Phil: need the tool that goes with it for people to view the videos.
But agreed, controlled burns have a cultural function but seem to be outdated as real preventive control.

Indeed, numbers are rare but I have the same idea....probably (almost certainly - both speculation, I haven't seen numbers) ...

@beteljuice, @kocher:
Anyway, I'll make an option to just use the number or the gadget. I'll identify the gadget some way, so that more ideas can be implemented and chosen. It will probably all remain in pwsFWIcurrent.txt, and yes, I'll give it an id. Would you both be happy? Give it some time, I'll be away for a few days, I'll look at it somewhere next week. Relatively lots of effort for such non-functional minor nicety, but as I concluded before: everything to have a better user experience
Maybe in 4.2.0 final but anyway I'll make something to keep you happy
I'll probably make something of the #Edit2 which I like best. I probably add the colour bar below it and make the flames only appear at orange being fully visible at beginning of red. If you want, you can supply a finished gadget of coursebeteljuice wrote: ↑Sun 09 Aug 2020 12:23 pmAll the php part is, is the inject of the .txt file (commented in the html)Does the PHP do anything important or is the resulting page source enough (I assume it is)?

Not my toyI'll give it an id. Would you both be happy?
Of course your widget would all be hard coded at source, no need for all the js I used.
... but if you add an id to the value <span> of the 'plain' .txt file, then it's 'get at-able' for codesters

Re: Fire Weather - pwsFWI
Today a small fire was registered in my village, in a ravine at the foot of the Carrascoy mountains.
I leave you a little video of the "ridiculous" affected area. Only 0.2Ha
