Can't access WOW site

Post by PaulMy »

I have been uploading to WOW since 2012 but been several months since I actually went in to my account. Now I can't access/login - get An Error Occurred.
The link I've used for years https://wow.metoffice.gov.uk/observatio ... d=37595665 gives:
There has been an error, we apologise for any inconvenience.
If asked, please give this error code to WOW team to help identify your issue: 33970724

Any thoughts?

Paul

My first thought is that the URL for retrieving individual observations may have changed. Have you tried starting from the map and navigating to your site?

My second thought is that you are given an error code, so you could contact the WOW team and ask them to take a look?

Looks like the website is down as I can't even go to the Home page. https://wow.metoffice.gov.uk/

Cumulus1 still uploads there for me but again, I haven't visited in ages.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

Uploading from my station does not give any errors, only during startup when it says: too many requests.

But there are some strange things:
  1. Cumulus does it's restart with far too old data (I restart automatically within a minute so probably no archived data at all so it just takes some old ones)

    Code: Select all

    2020-04-26 09:01:30.940 Creating WOW URL #1

  2. The next WOW gives a response of too many requests:

    Code: Select all

    2020-04-26 09:01:36.857 Uploading WOW archive #1
    2020-04-26 09:01:36.860 Normal running

2020-04-26 09:01:37.033 WOW Response: TooManyRequests: The custom error module does not recognize this error.
2020-04-26 09:01:37.033 End of WOW archive upload

  3. No more messages while WU and Windy continue;
I can't reach the site either, but the Dutch WOW site is open.
I have some outstanding questions but I don't get a response from neither the UK nor from the NL sides of the WOW.
Not good signs.

That is because WOW limits the rate of uploads. In their FAQ it says:
It is recommended that the interval between automatic observations from your AWS is at least 5 minutes
This is strictly enforced, so catch-up on restarting Cumulus generally fails.

Had a reply from the Met Office... "We are sorry to hear you are experiencing issues on the WOW website. The issue you refer to is one we are aware of and it is currently being investigated by our IT teams. We thank you for your patience while we work to rectify it."

It came from a person rather than an automated reply so it will be fixed soon hopefully.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

@freddie:
That's a clear answer, should have found it myself probably ;)

Wrt your offer to get the answer from WOW, we could give it a try, though I will keep trying the Dutch KNMI, because I think that should be my entrance.
Anyway: I am looking for the hook to get certain data for - in principle - all operational stations. Of course not all will qualify so in reality it will be a subset. There is not entry to get the data out of the system. We can store data, but not get it out. How to?

It surprises me, that asking for contact or just straight forward asking this question does give a deafening silence as a result.

A request such as yours is outside the design scope of the system. The system is designed to enable anybody to upload data to it, and then to display that data in map or table or graph format. There is no extraction API, as that is not what the system was designed to do.

In the UK Met Office there is a separate function called Datapoint that is more suited to your needs. Hopefully KNMI offers something similar.

It's probably a low priority, as it is asking for something outside the scope of the system. Also, the answer is given in the FAQ.

Yeahyeah.... And not giving any response etc... Wel as far as I am concerned, they can adjust their system and give something back. If they don't, I stop with WU and WOW. What the hell does a system exist for? Just to put data in and never get anything out? We pay tax money to put in and get nothing in return? Data just to display is the most useless use of data ever. I am not even asking for an API, I am just asking a question. There are many ways leading to Rome, they must have a way to get data out of the system.

Datapoint is nice but that's the official data and yes, KNMI has something like that as well.
But I am not interested in the official data, I want the PWS data.

Not replying is the rude way of sticking up the finger to me and saying they're incompetent.
The FAQ is unreachable so I can't see what it says but again, I am not interested in the FAQ or any other official answer, I want their communication and aid to get the data.

I guess it will lead to me stopping to supply data to WOW.

An alternative is to use this site as HansR pointed out. I missed it on my first read because he obscured the actual link:
https://wow.knmi.nl/

So it seems the only problem is the front end of WOW.

I don't see the point in getting the data out? There are far better places to retrieve your data from. In any case, the data that your own station is giving you is far richer than that being sent to WoW, so what would be the point?

Throwing a tantrum and threatening not to send your data there anymore is a bit OTT?!

I don't understand why it is unreachable for you, but it says this:
Can I download data from multiple Sites in one export?
No.

I see a point in getting those PWS data and do some experiments with it. May I?

And a tantrum? OTT.... whatever. I don't see use of a system which only asks but gives nothing.
If you like it, go.
freddie wrote: Sun 26 Apr 2020 12:32 pm Can I download data from multiple Sites in one export?
No.
So?? I lay down and die? I don't need it in one go, I just need a method to extract the data other than manual selection through the screen.
God, this is so 1950.

So in summary: I guess I disagree with you guys.
OK.
galfert wrote: Sun 26 Apr 2020 12:18 pm So it seems the only problem is the front end of WOW.
Mmm... No not the only problem: KNMI does not deliver automated data extraction for the PWSs either.

HansR, could it be that it not currently manned due to the Covid-19 lockdown and people having to work from home? That certainly is the situation in the UK, not sure about Netherlands.
