Not sure where to put this info.
I am now successfully running CumulusMX (b3025) on a Raspberry Pi 2 from an HDD installation of Raspian/Apache/MySQL.
Initial boot is from the SD card (no way around that as far as I can see) but after that the green access LED is not seen. This should significantly reduce the likelihood of SD failure due to 'SD thrashing' as reported in many Pi forums.
Guess I will find out the gotchas as I go along - but an encouraging start.

Re: Running on HDD with Raspberry Pi
Hi Phil, I (and Steve IIRC) have both been running our Pi's on HDD for some time now - nearly a year for me. For me, it has proven to be infinitely more reliable so far. In that, I experienced a few SD card corruptions before (mainly due to unexpected power-downs!), but since moving to HDD it has not suffered a single hiccup. The next step for me will be to replace the old laptop HDD in a caddy with a small USB attached SSD, even less power will be required, and gets rid of the mechanical failure aspect.
Good luck with your setup.

Hi,
Perhaps it would be good to write some installation instructions ...

Re: Running on HDD with Raspberry Pi
Here's my take on the subject: http://jim-jotting.blogspot.co.uk/2013/ ... day-3.html I'm now using a 256 MByte SD card as a boot loader.
Using a separate /home partition makes operating system upgrades easier, as all my data and personal settings are unaffected.

Re: Running on HDD with Raspberry Pi
I used the same source as Mark for the set-up for running on HDD. No problems at all (so far!)

Re: Running on HDD with Raspberry Pi
Now swapped main weather station (VantageVue) to CumulusMX running on BananaPi Pro with SATA SSD. Runs very nicely and allows me to do more things on the one system. I currently run CumulusMX (logging to MySQL on separate NAS system), a mail server (Dovecot/Postfix), Apache website and energy monitor (with local SQLite db) on the same system - only 8% CPU utilisation. Really impressed with the BananaPi so far.
Have just re-used 'old' RPi 2 to connect a WS3083 weatherstation (to CumulusMX of course!). Plan is to utilise this to gather UV/Light values and to position it so that the wind is measured at a reasonable height (e.g just above roof ridge). The VantageVue is in a relatively clear location but the wind measure is a mere 3m above ground - I need more height!!
