advforecast2.php V4.00 support for NWS dual-image icons

Post by saratogaWX »

The NWS is set to implement the dual-image forecast icons on 7-Jul-2015, and the advforecast2.php script has been updated (V4.00) to support both 'old' and 'new' forecast automatically.

The dual-images are dynamically created by a DualImage.php script (which I kinda reverse-engineered from the NWS version as there was no code available for their official version) by combining up to two icon template images to form a new image with 6-hour periods, and individual numbers for PoP where needed.
The new companion DualImage.php script and the associated icon templates (in ./forecast/icon-templates) is available
as a download for standalone users (along with the advforecast2.php script download) from the
script page at http://saratoga-weather.org/scripts-car ... dvforecast

Also available there is a newer set of PoP-stamped .jpg icons at 55x55px sizing to match the newer NWS icons.

For Base-USA template users, the Update tool page has the complete updates (with the new icons that weren't included in the saratoga-icons.zip set). Use query for Base-USA, Plugin-*, 06-Jul-2015 to get the complete .zip file.

Folks using the meteotriviglio animated GIF icons will NOT have dual-images displayed -- only the first 6-hour image will show up. It's just too involved to take apart two animated GIFs, extract parts, combine on new images and remake the single animated GIF. Also, the following NEW NWS images would be needed from Meteotriviglio to complete the current icon set:

Code: Select all

For once, I'm trying to make the update available BEFORE the change to the NWS website :) :roll:

Ken

Thanks for staying on top of this, Ken. Great work, as always.

I seem to be missing hz.jpg.
Capture.PNG
I wonder if I can get that from NWS?

Thanks,

Information about the new icons is here:
http://www.weather.gov/forecast-icons
I found hz.png, but no hz.jpg.

Photoshop time, perhaps?

Sorry about the multiple replies... :roll:

Assuming the icons are 55x58 I've resized and renamed the NWS hz.png file to hz.jpg:
hz.jpg
Any reason this won't work with your new scripts, Ken?

Thanks again,

Did you download the saratoga-icons2.zip and upload them-- it has hz.jpg (the old set used haze.jpg)
The new icons are size 55x55 per the NWS (which uses that, and 86x86 for their main page.. the 55x58 size is deprecated by the NWS.)

Hmmmmm...I thought, wrongly perhaps, that this setting on your update page would include them in the zip file:
update.PNG
I chose June 1st because I had a few other scripts that were also out of date.

Is there a direct link to saratoga-icons2.zip? Sorry, I must have missed it.

--K

UPDATE: Ok they are here:http://saratoga-weather.org/scripts-car ... dvforecast ...just as you said in your original post. :roll:
Bottom of the page. I missed that somehow.

Probably should just ignore me!

LOL.. the default links in the template install page and the script page are for the saratoga-icons2.zip file (it's in the document root of my website, so you could just type the URL). I'd not included a direct link to have the harvesters download it while scraping this site for links :)

I only included the NEW icons in the Base-USA.zip file (source of the updates) assuming that folks had installed the original saratoga-icons.zip and just needed 'freshening'. It would produce a mixed .jpg set of old 55x58 and new 55x55 icons, but what is 3 pixels among friends...

Primary recommendation is to download the saratoga-icons2.zip and upload to replace all the .jpg icons with a complete set of NWS new icons so the look/feel is consistent.

Re: advforecast2.php V4.01 support for NWS dual-image icons

Post by saratogaWX »

The update is ready - advforecast2.php V4.01 does fix the text-flow around the icon and the HTML validation issues.

For Base-USA template users, the Update tool page has the complete updates (with the new icons that weren't included in the saratoga-icons.zip set). Use query for Base-USA, Plugin-*, 07-Jul-2015 to get the .zip file.
Note: if you had not installed the 06-Jul-2015 update, the use that date for the query to get all the files needed.

Standalone users, use the script page for source and icons.

Best regards,
Ken

Installed advforecast2.php V4.01. It seems to be working well, except for the split icons. When I click on the NWS link on my Web page (just below the forecast) the split icons are where I expect. Website is computerwright.com/weather/index.htm. Any suggestions? -- Thanks, Ron

If you do a view-source of the page, you'll see
<!-- advforecast2.php (multi) - V4.01 - 07-Jul-2015 -->
<!-- NWS URL: http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.ph ... TextType=2 -->
<!-- zone=VAZ097 -->
<!-- corrected NWS URL='http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.ph ... TextType=2' -->
<!-- loading ./forecast-VAZ097-0.txt - 9074 bytes -->
<!-- isZone='' -->
<!-- new li format found -->
<!-- DualImage will not be done..missing DualImage.php file -->
You'll need to download and install the "Icon Set UPDATES July-2015 and DualImage.php script" from the script page to get the DualImage function working.

Be sure to install the script (DualImage.php) in the same directory as advforecast2.php AND the forecast/icon-templates/*.png files (in the forecast/icon-templates/ directory).

Thanks Ken,

Guess I should have paid more attention to the instructions and what I was downloading (didn't notice DuaImage.php) :oops: . This should now be up and running properly in short order.

Ron
