Upgrading to Windows 10

Post by steve »

Cumulus 1 and Cumulus MX both work correctly on Windows 10. Take a backup before you upgrade to Windows 10.

However, a number of people have found that the upgrade has changed their regional settings - in particular the the date/time formats, and in some cases, inexplicably, the list separator has been changed from a comma to a semicolon. Please check your settings after the upgrade, as significant changes to these settings will mean that Cumulus cannot recognise the data that was previously written. This will mean that you may not be able to view graphs etc, your all-time records etc may have been reset to recent dates, or it may fail to start at all, giving a message like this in the bugreport.txt file:

exception class : EVariantTypeCastError
exception message : Could not convert variant of type (UnicodeString) into type (Date).

You need to change your settings back to what they were before the Windows upgrade changed them (the quickest way to access the settings is to type intl.cpl into the search bar and press 'enter'). If the change in format has already caused problems with your data, then having corrected the data format, you can 'rewind' Cumulus (assuming your station supports this - it needs to have a data logger, but Oregon Scientific and Instromet stations do not support rewinding) by restoring from the backup you took before you upgraded. Even if your station does not support rewinding, it is probably your best option at this point, you will just have a gap in your data.

For people in New Zealand, Windows 10 usually changes your am/pm indicator - see this thread where I show the differences and what you need to change - https://cumulus.hosiene.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=14142

If for some reason you did not take a backup yourself, you can use one of the limited backups (of currently active data files) which Cumulus takes each time it starts (in the backup folder), and each day just after the end of day rollover (in the backup\daily folder). You do this by finding the latest set of backup files in the Cumulus folder from before the upgrade, and copying them to the data folder, then start Cumulus.

Another common problem after upgrading to Windows 10 is that the Cumulus MX user interface no longer works. Make sure you are running Cumulus MX with administrator privilege, as in the original instructions.
