Re: Battery life
the second set of Duracell Ultra batteries I replaced them with only lasted a matter of weeks Hi, It seems unlikely that even cheap batteries would fail that quickly. Did you try removing and replacing the batteries in the receiver (maybe several times needed) in case the receiver had dropped out o...

Re: WH3080/3081
Hi, Fine Offset probably recommend Alkalines because they nominally deliver 1.5 volts and most rechargeables deliver 1.2 volts. So the transmitter power (and thus range) may be smaller with rechargeables. Actually the manufacturers of primary (non-rechargeable) batteries usually specify the "en...

Re: La Crosse WS2355 in cold weather
Hi James, Even "fresh" Alkaline batteries should deliver at least 1.6 volts (each) so the extra few hundred millivolts from the Lithiums shouldn't be a problem, but perhaps it's just enough to push your La Crosse "over the edge". Can you try any "part used" Lithiums? Th...

Re: La Crosse WS2355 in cold weather
Hi James, I don't have any practical experience of the La Crosse (nor AA Lithium cells for that matter) but all the data suggests that Lithium cells are the best to use for this application. Particularly for low temperatures (below -20 degrees C), see a typical data sheet here . However, the situati...

Hi,
Yes, IMHO Steve's summary of the Fine Offsets is spot on.
You might like to see if the 3080/3081 is becoming available in your market as the addition of solar data in the comms channel could give more scope for "tinkering".
Cheers, Alan.

Re: Fine offset help
Hi, I've been doing a number of tests which have involved removing the battery and can't say that I've seen any "phantom" rain readings either. I normally remove the rain cable before the batteries (and replace after), but not every time. perhaps I ought to remove the receiver batteries fi...

Re: A little help?
Hi Murray, I haven't seen anybody quote the power consumption (current) of the transmitter, but most users seem to achieve at least a year's operation, sometimes with quite basic batteries. The currents I quote here are only for my own unit, so it will be interesting to see if anyone agrees (or disa...

Re: A little help?
Hi Murray, Yes there is a thread which I am planning to add to soon, because I've been doing some tests to achieve much the same. However, I think you should attempt to discover why the first batteries appeared to die so quickly. If you're considering modifying some garden lights you may be sufficie...

Re: A little help?
Hi, What type of batteries did you use? However a month is far too short a time for almost any type of battery to have failed. General wisdom is that Alkalines are suitable for most locations (and even the cheap "Heavy Duty" type should run the transmitter for a year), but the expensive Li...

Re: Fine Offset WH1081 cable length?
Hi, Yes, the solar cell may well need direct sunlight to overcome the "stiction" (static friction) of the motor. Also, I think most dc motors now use an "electronic commutator" which requires sufficient voltage to activate the circuitry. Solar-powering the fan seems a very neat i...

Re: Photos of the insides of Fine Offset sensors.
Hi, The crystals may differ in frequency by perhaps one part per million which represents 1 second in about 11 days. For this case, on average the messages from two transmitters might drift into collision in about nine months. The problem is that they may then continue colliding for many days or eve...

Re: Fine Offset Battery Meter
Hi Steve, I have plans to "improve" some (or many) aspects of the FO sensor hardware before commissioning the system. So I'm not running Cumulus yet and am not clear what the debug log may contain. However, I will try to do some more tests before finally fitting the transmitter onto the ma...

Re: Fine Offset Battery Meter
The big question - but do they work? Until my friend mentioned it I have not seen mine alert me even though I did have to replace the batteries in the transmitter. Hi, I've just been testing my new Maplin kit with a variable-voltage power supply, so think I can give an answer, which is "Hardly...

The 'cheap and cheerful' paper/foil reflector has been well documented for wireless router work with outstanding signal path improvements 'quoted' ! Hi, The designer appears to claim only 3dB improvement whereas Charlie talked of (and timfy may need) +20dB. I don't know how the 3dB figure was obtai...

Re: WH-3081 Pics
I would love to find some way of extending range as I live halfway up a mountain and want to situate an anemometer around six hundred feet above on the summit... it only gusts to 100mph down here in the "valley" Hi, Apologies for a late response but I've only just registered with th...
